About Abingdon, IL - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
Abingdon, Illinois is a small city found in Knox County. Approximately 3,200 people reside in this community, which is located about 50 miles west of Peoria. Abingdon was originally settled in 1828, and its first real claim to fame came in 1894 when a local resident received a patent for the common mousetrap. In 2012, voters approved a consolidation of school districts with nearby Avon, and now older students complete their postsecondary education at Abingdon-Avon High School.
While there are several businesses located in Abingdon, there is only one real tourist attraction. The Giant Totem Pole is 83 feet tall, and it is the tallest totem pole found east of the Rocky Mountains. It was carved in 1969 by artist Steve Greenquist.
Local businesses also support Abingdon residents. There are many unique restaurants like La Roma Pizza, Town & County Family Restaurant, and Carolyn & Company Café and Bakery. Many locals do their grocery shopping at the Hi Lo Grocery, and specialty gifts are available at Garden Gate Florist.
In Abingdon, muggy weather makes its way into the region during the summer, and temperatures are high. From June-August, average daily highs reach into the low- to mid-80s, sending some residents indoors to beat the heat. While a window air conditioning unit may keep a single room cool, security issues are a concern, as a window needs to remain open in order to support the system. Fortunately, central air conditioners eliminate this concern while offering consistent cooling throughout an entire home or business.
The summer season isn’t the only time that Abingdon residents will rely on home climate controls. Many people switch on their furnaces in October when conditions start to cool off, and a cold winter season lies ahead. During January, average daily highs only reach about 31 degrees Fahrenheit, which is below freezing. Snowfall is moderate with about 31 total inches per year, but reliable climate controls at home are crucial to stay safe throughout the season.
